MAKU AZU

GHANA
b.1985

Maku Azu is a contemporary artist whose practice explores materiality, identity, and the relationship between tradition and contemporary expression. Working across disciplines, her work reflects an intuitive and process-led approach, often engaging with themes of transformation, cultural memory, and the construction of meaning through form.

Her practice is characterised by a sensitivity to materials and surface, with an emphasis on tactility and the physical presence of the work. Through a combination of gesture, layering, and experimentation, Azu develops compositions that balance structure and spontaneity, allowing the process itself to inform the outcome. This approach situates her work within a broader discourse of contemporary art that values material investigation and conceptual openness.

Azu’s work resists fixed interpretation, instead creating space for reflection and dialogue. Her visual language draws on both personal and cultural references, forming a practice that is fluid, evolving, and grounded in an exploration of identity within a global context.

Maku Azu participated in the international residency programme at Fairlight Hall and Bridgepoint Art Centre, Rye (2024), selected by the Kowitz Family Foundation & Sarah Kravitz.
