Artist in RESIDENCE: TOMMY CAMERNO
During the Sarah Kravitz Residency Programme, British artist Tommy Camerno (b. 1992) developed a new body of paintings exploring the relationship between sculpture, architecture, and image-making.
Based in London, Camerno works across painting and metalwork, using stencils originally developed for sculpture to construct layered compositions that move between abstraction and figuration. His work draws on the decorative language of urban architecture particularly wrought iron and ornament reinterpreting these forms as what he describes as “urban ornament,” positioned between structure and symbolism.
Using spray paint and oil, these elements shift into atmospheric images that operate as both surface and shadow, reflecting his ongoing interest in translating three-dimensional form into painting. Influenced by architectural layering and the visual language of the city, his work explores the boundary between public and private space, unfolding coded narratives of desire, intimacy, and camouflage.
Camerno received an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2022 and was subsequently a finalist for the Ingram Prize. His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in London, Beijing, and Caserta, with a recent solo exhibition at Flatland Projects, Bexhill (2023).
